Fun Guys

Fun Guys

Two weeks ago, February 9th, 2008, I joined my friend Alanna Crumley Me next to Fun Guys and her mother on a trip to Oberlin. There we all took three of our pieces and 15$ and entered the Six-State Photography exhibition. If you haven't guessed yet, Fun Guys made it but my other two did not. My friend's mother also got one of her pieces accepted, a portrait of Alanna (appropriately named Alanna Nicole).

There was a public reception held on Sunday, February 17th at the New Union Center for the Arts in Oberlin. The reception lasted from 2 pm to 4 pm with an awards ceremony at about 3 pm. Several pieces received Juror's Awards along with a couple other miscellaneous awards. Justin Kronwetter was this years juror. During his speech he maintained a strong stance on why he chose select pieces in the show.

Sadly no oranges were ever eaten on that cold winter day.

Kronewetter believed that anyone who would show neglect or leave dirt in their frames must not have really cared for their work at all. He also felt that the frames should not take away from the photographs. Instead, the photograph should make the piece great.

Among the large crowd stood a few friendly faces. Gallery Coordinator Kyle Michalak was very helpful to all the artists who came to pick up rejected pieces or just needed help finding something. Seen here in this photo to the right,is Alanna and Kyle (hopefully he doesn't mind).

Also present that day was Spencer Cunningham. He works as an instructor at both the Toledo Museum of Art and Owens Community College. He had two pieces accepted in this exhibit, one of them receiving an award. In the photograph that follows, he stands with one his former students, Alanna.
